We walk the perimeter of the barrier, searching for a way forward. It takes over an hour to return to our original position, which we marked with a little hill raised from the hard earth.

Along the way, Reese’s wand continued to point toward the interior of the barrier, so we know we’re in the right place.

Tobias attempts to dig beneath the barrier without success, and when I fly over it, I discover it’s a solid dome with no access from the top, either.

With all other options wasted, we gather in front of it and try to break through using ley line magic. The barrier sucks up whatever spell Reese tries, though, leaving the invisible wall unaffected.

“So much for your magical dowsing rod,” Donald taunts from where he sits on the ground. “What’s your next step? Wish your way inside?”

The barrier of a High Councilor is no joke. Lord Marius’s had taken an enormous amount of power, a tornado, and time to wear it down. Even if we could do the same, it would alert the owner to our presence, and we’d be stopped before we made it inside.

Lord Marius had said his oasis was designed to keep everyone out, but that wasn’t strictly the case. It allowed Lord Marius free access, and anyone Lord Marius approved.

I turn to give Donald a considering look. He and his clones would be on the list of people approved to move in and out of this place. It wouldn’t make sense to have to gain his master’s approval every time one of them was on the move.

Striding over to his bubble, I step behind it and roll it forward.

He slips and slides along the ground. “What are you doing?”

I continue rolling him forward. “Seeing if you’re a key.”

His golden eyes widen with alarm, and he smashes his body against the side of the bubble farthest from the barrier. “That will never work.”

“Then, why are you trying so hard to get away?” I ask.

The front of the bubble presses against the barrier and stops.

“See?” Donald twists to glare at me over his shoulder. “I told you—”

He cuts off with a yelp as I roll the bubble back toward myself, and he loses his footing. He falls, landing on his back.

“Sorry about this,” I tell him.

He stares up at me from the ground. “What are you—”

I slam my open palm against the bubble with strength born of the energy in my core, and Donald flies off the ground, his body slamming into the far side of his prison.

The bubble pops past the invisible barrier, creating an opening where the land beyond finally comes into view.

Quickly, we rush through before the hole closes once more, and Tobias and I catch Donald’s bubble before he can roll too far.

Flint whistles as he looks around. “Talk about creepy.”

“Someone has seen one too many cartoons about evil lairs,” Reese agrees.

I stay quiet as I take in the purple-tinged rocks and black swamp that line a twisted path up a hill. At the top sits a house that looks like it was pulled from a Halloween poster.
